insurance for home bakery
I am wanting to put in a home bakery in our basement with a food truck/ trailer delivery system for selling, for our daughter. The problem I am having is in getting insurance. My SF agent says my homeowners policy will not cover anything if a fire would start in the business part of the home and even if it didn't start there it would be up to the claims dept at the time to see if it would even be covered because of the home bakery. Even with business insurance through them. But would be happy taking my money.
I know im not the only one wanting to have a small bakery in there home. Is everyone doing this with out proper coverage and hope that everything will be ok?
What insurance companies cover this type of set up? I have gotten in touch with several and have not gotten replies.
What state is this in? Laws and regs will vary by state, but Cottage Food Laws in your state will govern whether you can sell breadstuff that was baked/prepared in your home kitchen without a license. Further, liability insurance for cottage food makers probably varies by state as well.
I have no experience with Liability Insurance Policy for this set up, but at least in Texas there are a couple of options... https://texascottagefoodlaw.com/liability-insurance/
it would be in Missouri. Talked to county health inspector and there is not a problem if I put in and have a inspected kitchen. It would be legal on that end.
It just seems that none will insure a set up like that.
I just typed "home business insurance" into Google Search, and some links came up that looked promising. You may have already done that and exhausted the list, but https://www.thehartford.com/home-based-business-insurance claims to be exactly what you are looking for. Google is good at making things appear that way, so this may also not be "it".
If that fails, try a couple business insurance brokers specializing in small businesses. They make their living finding insurance for things, so likely one of them would know if it is really out there or not. I've worked with these in another life and they can be effective if you find the right one. I believe they are paid by the insurance carrier to, rather than by you.
Best of luck to you

edit: I have no relationship with or interest in The Hartford, and have never done business with them.
i have contacted the Hartford but haven't gotten a reply back, along with several other company's It seams when talking home business like this it is hard to get a straight answer out of them all they say it depends or we will determine that if something happens. A little late then in my opinion...
But still hopeful we can find something.
