Sandwich Isle Bread Company
We're visiting the Big Island of Hawaii, and went today to the Farmers Market at Waimea (Kamuela). There we found a wood burning oven on a trailer, operated by Kevin Cabrera of Sandwich Isle Bread Company. A nice selection of breads and unbelievable Kona coffee cookies! We had a nice chat about bread formulas and WBOs. Kevin used to be a chef at the Mauna Kea resort, and now bakes excellent bread. The Pain au Levain was just coming out of the oven, and we got a warm loaf.
It was a great find, because we were missing good sourdough.

Nice to see your post, Glenn....really nice! Gee, I've been worried about you guys...haven't noticed you posting lately...forgot you said you going on vacation! I feel much better now. Have a fantastic vacation and don't eat to much of that great Hawaiian food!
I did some experiments with quick breads that weren't worth blogging about, then went on vacation. But my bread adventures will continue soon.
I do love Island food. We've had some great meals and tried some wonderful foodstuffs, like the tropical fruit jams we found at the farmers market today--including passion fruit-jalapeno jam!! Yummmm!!

We enjoyed a trip to the Big Island a year and a bit ago.

If you're still in Kamuela, we loved Merriman's restaurant - had a beautiful lunch there - but enough with my trip down memory lane!
I wanted to take a minute and pass along this information in case it's of interest to you while you're there.
That chocolate sounds wonderful. We've been visiting Kona for 20 years and never heard of it. We'll look for it.
We were just passing through Kamuela. We're back at our friends' place in Kona (our usual Big Island stomping ground). We didn't get to Merriman's this time, but love that restaurant. We had an excellent meal at Brown's Beach House at the Orchid last night, and have enjoyed several good Hawaiian style meals at our favorite local Kona places.
Since we've spent part of each of the last four days in the water, and I need a rest, we're going to stay dry tomorrow. I plan to bake and cook--Portugese Sweet rolls and Spicy Braised Ginger Chicken.
If the rolls are presentable, I'll post pix.
The chocolate place was a nice stop. You might want to call for directions/keep their phone number on hand en route, though; we got a little bit lost when trying to find this place (but could have been poor navigation on my part).
Another restaurant recommendation - thanks - will file that away for future.
